Enclosed Flares & RTOs
As part of its expertise in controlling hazardous air pollutants and greenhouse gases, Pyro Green-Gas offers technologies for the incineration of unwanted emissions of landfill gas, digester gas, and otherwise contaminated gas suitably treated by incineration.
High temperature enclosed flares and regenerative thermal oxidizers (RTOs) are air pollution abatement technologies which provides safe, efficient, and smokeless destruction of hydrocarbon and/or VOC containing gas. Enclosed flares meet increasingly stringent emission guidelines across the globe without the need for steam assistance or forced air circulation. RTOs are suited to destroy even trace amounts of organic pollutants with minimal enriching fuel and thus low operating costs. As part of its offering, Pyro Green-Gas tailors its offering of flares and RTOs to your specific requirements.
Design Features and Benefits
Biogas and landfill gases are a mixture of methane (CH4), carbon dioxide (CO2) with various impurities such as hydrogen sulfides (H2S), odorous and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and siloxanes. Across the globe, jurisdictions increasingly mandate the capture of these gas at the source and their destruction through incineration.
Although many landfills have and will be valorized as Renewal Natural Gas (RNG), some kind of incineration device remains necessary in the event of downtime, maintenance or during emergency conditions. Digester biogas valorization plants have the same requirement against direct emissions to atmosphere and so incineration equipment here also remains a necessary part of the biogas valorization operation.
Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTOs) are suitable for the thermal destruction of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrocarbons, and hazardous air pollutants in gas streams with poor calorific value which are therefore not suitable for flaring.
Enclosed flame flares are the technology of choice for such operations as the enclosed flame is sheltered from the elements and the combustion chamber well-insulated allowing for precise temperature control to ensure efficient destruction of hydrocarbon pollutants and impurities. Pyro Green-Gas procures to its clients self-contained, pre-mounted on a structural steel skid as well as pre-wired and pre-piped flares for ease of installation and start-up. Combustion is temperature-controlled with all monitoring and control elements as well as adjustable set-point settings integrated in a weather-proof cabinet.
In the biogas upgrading chain, certain purification technologies produce vent gases that contain enough methane or organic compounds to require that these gases be incinerated prior to their discharge.
For example, carbon dioxide separation systems using hollow fibre membrane or vacuum pressure swing adsorption (VPSA) technology reject CO2 with some methane. Similarly, a nitrogen rejection unit (NRU) based on VPSA technology produces a waste stream of nitrogen contaminated by a small amount of methane, and the purge gas used to regenerate adsorbents in VOCs/siloxanes capture units, becomes loaded with organic compounds which also require destruction.
These vent gases are mostly composed of inert gas (CO2 and N2) and during the regeneration cycle, the calorific value of that purge gas varies. To provide for full thermal oxidation of the organic content a controlled amount of dilution air is required and is mixed with the vent gases. The quantity of dilution air is modulated to prevent high temperature upsets during peaks of the heat load.
A regenerative thermal oxidizer, due to its heat recovery chambers, pre-heats the gas up to the incineration temperature and ensures that the oxidation reaction is complete in the combustion chamber where the required retention time and mixing is provided.
